NOTE: Critter Quitters have been designed for easy installation by home owners. However, we can assume no responsibility for injury or death occurring during installation of this or any Avalon Manufacturing Product. A roofing professional can assist if needed.

In order to supply the correct vent shields, we need to know three things

  1. The diameter of your vents
  2. The number of vent shields
  3. The pitch(angle) of the roof

Please review the video below if this is the first time you are installing the Critter Quitter™ or you would like to refresh yourself on the installation procedure.

If you need additional information concerning determining diameter or pitch, please scroll down the page for a more detailed discussion.

To determine what size vent shield you need, all you need to do is measure the diameter of your vent at the exit. If its 3 inches or under including flashing, then you need a Size A Vent Shield. If its 4 inches in diameter including flashing you need a Size B Vent Shield. You may notice that if you have the lead flashing that it is going to be very rough, not round and beat up on top, this is because it’s folded over the pipe. However, it’s very soft and can be tapped with any small hammer, wrench, screwdriver, or by hand into a round shape.

Pitch is the angle of the roof.

Pitch is measured by how much rise the roof has for one foot of run. In other words, if you measured out one foot horizontally, how much does the roof rise at the end of that foot. Basically a 1 pitch is 3 ¾ of a degree. So a pitch of 12 is basically a 45 degree angle, a pitch of 6 is a 22 ½ degree angle, and a pitch of 3 is an 11 ¼ angle, give or take.

Although any Critter Quitter™ will work on just about any roof, ordering the correct model will make a neater installation. Critter Quitters™ come in two standard pitches - Flat (CQF) and Sloped(CQS). The Flat pitch will fit roofs that are flat to slightly inclined. The Sloped will work on roofs that have a moderate to fairly steep pitch. Typically, if you have a shingled house you would use the Sloped shield, if you have a flat or slightly angled roof you would use the Flat shield.

Steep roofs may require to be ordered custom cut as they may need to be made longer to cover the vent. There is no charge for custom cut vents; however, we cannot accept returns of custom cut units. You should not go on any roof over a pitch of 8; they are very steep and require special training and equipment.

Just follow the simple steps below.

  1. Determine the size of the vents.
  2. Count the number of sizes.
  3. Determine the pitch as close as possible. Critter Quitters™ do not require a snug fit to the roof; in fact a gap is actually preferred to allow the roof to move.
  4. Order via the order form.
